MIAMI STREET PHOTOGRAPHY

SEE MIAMI DIFFERENTLY.

Miami is more than beaches, palm trees and postcards.

It is people moving through the streets. Light cutting between buildings. Shadows stretching across sidewalks. Architecture, texture, movement, contrast and those unexpected moments that happen once—and disappear just as quickly.

This is Miami street photography.

And this is how I see it.

DON’T JUST VISIT MIAMI. PHOTOGRAPH IT.

MIAMI, SEEN IN MONOCHROME

Miami is one of the most colorful cities in the world.

So why photograph it in black and white?

Because when the color disappears, something unexpected happens.

You begin to notice the light.

The shadows.

The expressions.

The textures.

The geometry.

The relationships between people and the places they occupy.

Black and white removes the distraction of color and brings the photograph down to its essential elements—light, contrast, composition, emotion and moment.

For me, photographing Miami in monochrome isn't about making the city look different.

It's about seeing what was already there.

A LIFETIME OF SEEING MIAMI

I've called Miami home for more than 60 years and I've been behind a camera for approximately 50 years.

My photographic journey began in the 1970s with a Canon AE-1, shooting black-and-white film and developing my own prints in a home darkroom.

Decades later, I returned to monochrome photography and eventually committed completely to the medium.

Today, I photograph Miami with a Leica Q3 Monochrom—a camera built specifically for black-and-white photography.

But the camera is only part of the process.

The real challenge is learning to see.

WHAT IS MIAMI STREET PHOTOGRAPHY?

Street photography is about observing life as it happens.

There is no script.

No retake.

No perfect setup.

You walk, watch, wait and look for the moment when everything comes together.

A person enters a patch of light.

A shadow creates a perfect frame.

Two strangers cross paths.

Architecture creates a geometric composition.

A facial expression tells a story.

Sometimes the photograph is obvious.

More often, you have to find it.

Walk. Watch. Wait. See. Photograph.

That is street photography.

STREET PHOTOGRAPHY IN MIAMI

Miami gives a street photographer an extraordinary variety of environments and subjects.

From the Art Deco architecture and energy of Miami Beach to the cultural rhythm of Little Havana, the creative streets of Wynwood, the urban geometry of Brickell and Downtown, and the neighborhoods that exist beyond the typical tourist itinerary, every part of Miami offers something different to photograph.

But the goal isn't simply to visit Miami's famous locations.

The goal is to photograph what happens there.

The city becomes your studio.

The streets become your canvas.

And every walk becomes an opportunity to make a photograph that could only have been made in Miami.

EXPERIENCE MIAMI THROUGH STREET PHOTOGRAPHY

DON'T JUST SEE THE CITY. PHOTOGRAPH IT.

Monochrome Miami offers hands-on Miami street photography experiences for locals, visitors, beginners and experienced photographers.

These aren't conventional sightseeing tours.

You're not simply being taken from one landmark to another.

You are walking the streets with a photographer, learning how to recognize light, shadow, composition, timing and the unexpected moments that make street photography so compelling.

Bring a Leica.

Bring a Canon, Sony, Nikon or Fujifilm.

Bring a film camera.

Or bring your smartphone.

The camera doesn't matter as much as how you see.

LEARN TO SEE THE PHOTOGRAPH BEFORE YOU TAKE IT

The best street photography isn't necessarily about having the most expensive camera.

It's about anticipation.

Where is the light?

Where will the subject move?

What happens if I wait?

What happens if I change my position?

What is happening in the background?

Is there a relationship between the person, the architecture and the environment?

Street photography teaches you to slow down while the city moves around you.

During a Monochrome Miami experience, we work with the fundamentals that make a photograph stronger:

LIGHT
Learn to recognize directional light, hard light, soft light and the dramatic shadows Miami creates throughout the day.

COMPOSITION
Look beyond the obvious subject and understand how lines, shapes, layers and negative space build an image.

TIMING
Street photography often comes down to a fraction of a second. Learn to anticipate the moment rather than simply react to it.

CONTRAST
Black and white photography depends on the relationship between light and dark. Learn to see those relationships before pressing the shutter.

MOMENT
The most interesting photograph may be the one you almost walked past.

MIAMI WITHOUT THE POSTCARD

There is the Miami everyone knows.

And then there is the Miami you discover when you slow down and start looking.

A man sitting alone beneath a palm tree.

A woman caught in a shaft of afternoon light.

A stranger reflected in a storefront.

A shadow stretching across an Art Deco wall.

A couple crossing the street.

A fleeting expression.

A moment of stillness in the middle of chaos.

These aren't landmarks.

They're moments.

And once they're gone, they're gone.

That's what makes street photography so addictive.

WHY BLACK AND WHITE?

Color tells you what a scene looks like.

Black and white can make you look at why it feels the way it does.

Without color competing for your attention, the photograph becomes about structure, light, texture, emotion and atmosphere.

That's particularly powerful in Miami.

The city is saturated with color, but beneath that color is another visual language—one built from brilliant sunlight, deep shadows, dramatic architecture, reflections, movement and people.

Remove the color and Miami doesn't disappear.

It reveals itself.

FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS OF ALL LEVELS

You don't need to be a professional photographer.

You don't need a Leica.

You don't need years of experience.

You don't even need a dedicated camera.

THIS ISN'T A TOUR

Miami doesn't need another sightseeing tour.

You can see the landmarks from a bus.

You can photograph the postcard.

Or you can step into the streets and discover what happens between the landmarks.

Monochrome Miami is about slowing down.

Walking.

Observing.

Chasing light.

Finding shadows.

Talking about photography.

Making photographs.

And experiencing Miami from behind the camera.

SEE THE CITY.
FIND THE MOMENT.
MAKE THE PHOTOGRAPH.

DISCOVER MIAMI'S NEIGHBORHOODS THROUGH PHOTOGRAPHY

Miami is not one neighborhood.

And there isn't one way to photograph it.

Depending on the experience, our photography can take us into different environments throughout Miami and Miami Beach.

SOUTH BEACH

Art Deco architecture, pedestrians, tourists, locals, reflections, street life and the constantly changing light of Ocean Drive and the surrounding streets.

LITTLE HAVANA

Culture, people, architecture, movement and everyday moments create an entirely different photographic rhythm.

WYNWOOD

Murals, textures, people, urban geometry and the collision of art and street life.

DOWNTOWN & BRICKELL

Glass, steel, reflections, shadows and the geometry of modern Miami.

BEYOND THE POSTCARD

Some of the most interesting photographs aren't found at the places everyone tells you to photograph.

They're found when you start looking for yourself.

YOUR MIAMI. YOUR PHOTOGRAPHS.

You may arrive in Miami looking for photographs.

You may leave seeing the city differently.

That's the real purpose of a Monochrome Miami photographic experience.

Not to give you a collection of snapshots.

Not to take you from landmark to landmark.

But to help you develop an eye for the moments happening around you.

Because once you learn to see them—

you start finding photographs everywhere.
